A malfunction of the heat pump can be caused by many problems. Three common problems include:
Frozen heat pump – in winter, a frozen heat pump may be the result of a failure of the defrosting cycle, an idle outdoor fan, low refrigerant consumption, physical blocking of the outdoor unit or water entering the unit and freezing. A frozen heat pump does not heat up and, even worse, can cause serious damage or failure if allowed to operate. In summer, the internal coil or the copper line leading to the compressor may freeze as a result of low refrigerant consumption, clogging of the air filter or very dirty coils.
Constant operation – in winter, check the thermostat to make sure that the heat pump is not set to cool. Other causes may be a frozen outer coil, a compressor malfunction, or a dirty and poorly maintained unit. In summer, make sure that the system is not in heating mode. Other problems may be three-digit temperature values, a refrigerant leak, or a dirty/clogged coil or air filter.
Cold blowing in heating mode – make sure that the thermostat has not been switched to AC/cool mode. Otherwise, the problem may be low refrigerant flow, malfunction of the reversing valve or compressor. It can also be the result of poor maintenance and a dirty/clogged coil.
